Captain Burk, Reminder

by Waterford Police PBA on November 18th, 2008

I sent word out on this a week or so ago but I will do it again and encourage you to attend if you can.  I don’t think you will be sorry.  The tickets are $10 each and you can pick them up at the Waterford VFW, the Oswegatchie Fire House on RTE 1 or I can pick them up for you if you let me know how many you want.  Attached is a flyer and below are the details of the dinner.

The Waterford Firefighers L-4629 Pasta Dinner that will be held on Saturday, December 13th at the Waterford VFW Post starting at 5pm.  We have a guest speaker Captain Burk (Ret. U.S. Air Force Captain), coming from Arizona who is a Bronze Star Recipient and Vietnam Veteran who was the only survivor in a plane crash which 14 people perished.  He recieved burns on over 65% of his body and wasn’t expected to live past 10 days (post crash).

He’s a motivational speaker who has been all over the world talking to first responders and his story was on The Discovery Health Channel, but you can read more about him on his website www.georgeburk.com  He has quite a story and will be a must see for anyone who has the chance.

If you have a second – please check out his biography at the listed website below. Last year, I had an oportunity to attend a lecture by Lt. Col. Grossman who is also a motivational speaker. I left there with some new outlooks on life.

In the case of Captain Burk who will be at the club – he is in a different situation where he is a Vietnam Vet who is beyond lucky to have survived a military plane crash. This will be an outstanding program and certainly foolish for anyone who can’t take a moment to have some spaghetti to support the fireman and listen to Captain Burke’s view on his life and career. A definite one time opportunity to shake hands with a guy who was given a second chance on life.  (I spoke with a firefighter that was at FDNY’s Academy 10 years ago and he remembers George.  George spoke their quite often.  He said they had a full house….500 plus people and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.)

He has gracefully agreed to discount his book “The Bridge Never Crossed, A Survivor’s Search for Meaning” that he will have for sale that night and turn over any monies made beyond his discounted book price to “Ahn’s” Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Approximately $9 per book will go to the scholarship.

Ahn’s parents, Tan and Paul have been asked to be the guests of honor.  A VIP table will be set up for them and Ahn’s photo will be on display.  If you take the time to attend, I don’t think you will be sorry.

Thanks All,

Dave Anderson
