On Wednesday, April 22, 2009, following an extradition from Missouri, members of the Waterford Police Department returned to Connecticut with Shawn Bettencourt (dob 08/30/78).
The arrest of Mr. Bettencourt was the result of an extensive investigation conducted by the Waterford Police Department Detective Division beginning in January of 2005. At that time Mr. Bettencourt was a Connecticut resident, and was being investigated as a co-conspirator in counterfeit check cashing and check kiting schemes in the amount of $16,500. As part of his activities Mr. Bettencourt stole the identity of a Connecticut resident and utilized this same identity to open fraudulent accounts.
During the course of the investigation, an arrest warrant was filed for Mr. Bettencourt, but was unable to be served as he had left the state.
The ongoing investigation into the whereabouts of Mr. Bettencourt continued, and lie was subsequently located in Missouri. Extradition was requested and granted by the New London Superior Court State’s Attorneys office.
Mr. Bettencourt was arrested and charged with the following:
Conspiracy to Commit Larceny in the First Degree (53a-48/53a-122)
Larceny in the First degree (53a-122)
Identity Theft (53a-129b)
