Danbury officer killed in hit and run

New Milford, Conn. (WTNH) – An off-duty Danbury police officer was killed in a hit and run on Route 7, police said.

Officer Donald Hassiak, 41, was riding to work on his bicycle when he was hit on the New Milford – Brookfield line. It happened around 10:30 Thursday night on the southbound side of the road.

Police say the vehicle left the scene, but they have identified a car and are investigating a person of interest.

New Milford police say Hassiak leaves a wife and three sons.

On Hassiak’s Facebook page friends left messages of condolence, offering prayers and thoughts for the family.

“You were one of the good guys,” wrote one friend. Another said “A good man gone way too soon.”
